Common problems

Pop up Blockers
can prevent access to some websites. See the notes in How to configure the Pop-up Blocker in Internet Explorer.

PsycINFO is heavily affected by a pop up blocker.

UDo and Vista
- if you have problems accessing UDo from Internet Explorer 7 on a Windows Vista computer: in Internet Explorer from the menu choose Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > under the Security section untick the "Use TLS 1.0" box.

Internet Explorer version 8 default security settings - the default security settings in Internet Explorer version 8 can cause problems with electronic resources. For more information see the Internet Explorer version 8 default security settings word document.

Cookies

Several websites need to install a cookie on your computer to function. To allow this, see below. These notes are relevant if you are using Shibboleth authentication.

Method 1 - Use the "Medium" Privacy setting

In Internet Explorer, goto Tools > Internet Options > Privacy > set Settings to Medium. This is one of the minimum browser requirements for using Shibboleth authenticated websites, see http://www.athensams.net/browser.html for details.

In Firefox, goto Tools > Options > Privacy > under Cookies, tick the "Accept cookies from sites" box.

Method 2 - Adding specific sites to your browser.

In Internet Explorer, goto Tools > Internet Options > Privacy.
Then, next to Web sites click on Edit (Service Pack 1) or Sites (Service Pack 2).
Then in "Address of web site" type in whichever of the following websites you use and then click on "Allow".

In Firefox, goto Tools > Options > Privacy > under Cookies, click on Exceptions.
Then in "Address of web site" type in whichever of the following websites you use and then click on "Allow".

Method 3 - Adding all the sites to your browser.

Note: The method only works in Internet Explorer. For Firefox please use "Method 2 - Adding specific sites to your browser".

Click the athens_ie_settings.txt link. A new window appears.  
From the menu (top left of the browser window) choose "File" then "Save As...". [screen shot1]
Save the file to your hard disk, for example into "My Documents".
From the Internet Explorer menu choose "Tools".
 
Then choose "Internet Options". [screen shot 2]
Then choose "Privacy" tab.  
Then choose "Import..." button. [screen shot 3]
Navigate to where you saved the athens_ie_settings.txt file.  
Change "Files of type.." to "All files". [screen shot 4]
Double click on the athens_ie_settings.txt file. [screen shot 5]
The message "Your privacy settings file was successfully imported" should appear. [screen shot 6]
Click on OK.  
To see what this has done click on "Edit" or "Sites" button. A list of websites that are allowed to write cookies to your computer has been imported into your Internet Explorer settings.  

Internet zone Security settings and Trusted Sites

To reduce the number of pop up windows, in Internet Explorer:

1. From the menu options at the top of Internet Explorer, goto Tools > Internet Options Security.
Click on Internet.
Click on Custom Level.
Under Download, for "Automatic prompting for file downloads" choose "Enable".
Under Download, for "File download" choose "Enable".
Under Miscallaneous, for "Display mixed content" choose "Enable".
Click on OK to save changes.

2. From the menu options at the top of Internet Explorer, goto Tools > Internet Options Security.
Click on Trusted Sites.
Cick on the Sites button.
In "Add this website to this zone" add the same websites listed in the Cookies section of this page.
Click OK to save changes.

Cross website linking (OpenURLs)

8 websites allow cross website linking. This is where some websites only have abstracts of journal articles (eg: CSA) but the journal articles may be held on another website (eg: EBSCO EJS). To check if the journal is available from other websites:

    Note: linking is only supported from within articles hosted on Ingenta, not for links to other websites. The Linking Options > OpenURL link on the right of the page only gives an OpenURL formatted weblink to the current page.

Creating screen shots

If you are having problems using an electronic resource from a home computer, it is extremely usefull to create screen shots of the problem to pass onto the support desk of the electronic resource.

When the problem happens

1. press the print screen button (to the right of the F12 function key)
2. goto Start > Programs > Accessories > Paint
3. goto Edit > Paste
4. goto File > Save as and save the file to your computer's hard disk.
5. Email this image file as an attachement to G.Handley@derby.ac.uk

Adobe acrobat and Ebooks

To view some ebooks it is important to setup Internet Explorer for use with Adobe Acrobat.

1. Start Adobe Acrobat. There are several ways to do this.You can open an Adobe Acrobat PDF file on your computer. Or click on Start at the bottom left of the monitor then Programs then Adobe Acrobat. There might be an icon on the desktop of your computer to start Adobe Acrobat.
2. From the menu at the top of Adobe Acrobat choose Edit then Preferences.
3. On the left click on Internet. On the right tick the "Display PDF in browser" box

4. On the left click on Page Display. On the right set "Page Layout" to "Single Page".

5. Click on OK.

 

On campus links

The on campus authenticated resources do not require a password to access. However, they an only be used on the Buxton and Derby sites, which requires a University account to logon to a computer. For off campus access use the links from Electronic Resources or the Ezproxy links.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar is a version of the Google search engine that search academic ejournal and abstracting websites. Google Scholar has to be setup in your web browser so you can then locate the full text.

Start with ther Google Scholar via Ezproxy link.
Login using your Udo account.
Always start with this link as that sets up Ezproxy authentication which is needed to access the full text of journal articles.
 
Click on "Scholar Preferences".  

Next to "Libray Links" type in "derby" and click on "Find Library".

Tick the box next to "University of Derby (Univ. of Derby E-Journals)".
Make sure "Open WorldCat (Library Search)" is NOT ticked.

Click on "Save Preferences".  
Back at the Google Scholar start page, search for something eg: house prices.  
On the results page (under only some results) click on the link "Univ. of Derby E-Journals".  
At the Electronic Journals page, click on "Find article".
If the phrase "This title is not available for YYYY in the A-Z list of electronic journals" appears then that journal is not subscribed to.
 

Redirecting University emails

By default emails from the University goto your student email address eg: something@unimail.derby.ac.uk If you want the emails to goto a different address eg: something@hotmail.com then you should setup email forwarding.

For staff there is probably no email address set and you should contact the library.

Ebooks and ebook readers (Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader etc)

Library ebooks do not support dedicated ebook readers. Internet tablets such as the Apple iPad will work with ebooks as long as Adobe Acrobat Reader PDFs can be displayed. To download ebooks from Dawsonera will just require Adobe Acrobat Reader. To download ebooks from EBL will require Adobe Digital Editions (ADE).

Ezproxy links

Use your Udo account with the list of Ezproxy authenticated resources.

If there is a site that you are having difficulties accessing then try putting this Ezproxy stub in front of the weblink:

For example, if you are trying to access:
http://search.ebscohost.com.derby.ac.uk/login.aspx?direct=true&db=amed&AN=0157675&site=ehost-live
Then instead try to access:
https://login.ezproxy.derby.ac.uk/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com.ezproxy.derby.ac.uk/login.aspx?direct=true&db=amed&AN=0157675&site=ehost-live

You will have to enter Udo account again when using this Ezproxy stub.

Ezproxy favourites bookmarklet

Right click on the "via EzProxy" link below and choose "Add to Favourites".
At the warning message "You are adding a favourite that might not be safe." choose Yes.
Save to your favourites or click on "Create In" and choose Favourites Bar.
When you have difficulties accessing a webpage then goto your Favourites and choose "via EzProxy".
Login with your UDo account.
The webpage will be automatically redirected through Ezproxy.
